Last week I mentioned Donald Trump’s quote of Psalm 133:1 “How good and pleasant for brothers to dwell together in unity!” Now for the story behind the song Blest Be The Tie That Binds .
John Fawcett was orphaned at the age of twelve and worked as an apprentice tailor in a sweatshop for fourteen years. He was saved under the preaching of George Whitfield at age sixteen. When he was in his twenties a small impoverished church in Wainsgate asked him to be their pastor. They struggled to pay him and often brought him produce instead of money. It was difficult for his wife and children to survive with so little.
After seven years he received a call to move to London and replace a successful pastor who had died. He gave his farewell sermon, packed up his family and loaded all their belongings. As they were saying their farewells he and his wife realized they could not leave the people they loved. They notified the church in London they were not coming and they stayed. Five years later they built a new chapel and he went on to stay at that church until he died. He was later offered a position to become the President of the Bristol Baptist Academy which he also declined.
I think Jesus wants his people to be so much a part of the community of believers we worship with that we cannot bear to be separated.
I am posting a video separate. Listen to the words. So sweet!!
