Immortal, Invisibl, God Only Wise

Walter Chalmers Smith 1850-1894 was a pastor in Scotland for forty four years. This hymn is based on Paul’s words to Timothy in 1 Timothy 1:17

 It is said that this hymn is a “flowery attempt to express the inexpressible.”

Today many people want to put God in a box they can understand and so we have television programs and movies that make light of God. People even refer to Him as “the man upstairs”.  If we believe the Word of God and who He is as revealed in scripture how can we refer him to him casually or in common terms as a man?  The attributes of God are described in the Bible for all who desire to really know who He is. If you listen to the words of this song you can get a small glimpse of the awesomeness of our ALMIGHTY GOD.

Also when we read the Lord’s Prayer it starts out “Our Father who art in Heaven (yes that is where he is right now) hallowed be Thy name. That means His name and His reputation are HOLY.  That means we don’t take Him lightly.  Isaiah’s vision of God:

“I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, HGH AND EXALTED, with the train of His royal robe filling the (most holy part of the) temple. Above Him seraphim (heavenly beings) stood; each one had six wings” with two wings he covered his face, with two sings he covered his feet, and with two wings he flew. And one called out to another, saying,

“Holy, Holy, Holy is the lord of hosts;

The whole earth is filled with his glory.”

And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, and the temple was filling with smoke. Then I said,

“Woe is me! For I am ruined, because I am a man of ( ceremonially) unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the Kind, the Lord of hosts.”

This vision is repeated in Revelation 4: 9-11.

In Ezekiel 1:22-28 there is also a vision God’s throne in Heaven. After seeing the vision  Ezekiel says, “This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory and brilliance of the Lord, and when I saw it, I fell face downward and I ha-heard a voice of One speaking.

Next time you hear someone say God’s name in any context realize that it is HOLY and when we speak of him it should only be to bring him GLORY!!
