Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the just is like the shining sun, That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.
Eliza Hewitt grew up in Philadelphia in 1851 during the Civil War. Because of her love of children she studied and became a teacher. While teaching one day an unruly student hit her in the back with his slate and she suffered a spinal injury that required her to be in a body cast for six months. It was uncertain if she would ever be able to walk again. When the cast was removed she was encouraged to try and walk in a nearby park. It was on a beautiful spring day as she managed to walk a short distance that she sat and wrote these words expressing the joy in her heart. She never fully recovered enough to return to the classroom so she devoted her life to Bible study and hymn writing.
This is not the only great hymn she wrote. I will continue to give the stories of her hymns in the next few blogs. I promise most of you will know them all!!!
