Rescue the Perishing Fanny Crosby 1820-1913 Someone suggested to Fanny that she write a song about rescuing the perishing from the scripture in Luke 14:23. While speaking to the boys at a rescue mission in New York City she pleaded with them to come to her after the service if anyone there had wandered from home and  the teaching of their mother. After the service a young man approached her and asked, “Did you mean me”?  A few days later the words of this song came to her.  This song says a lot. It shows that Fanny Crosby had a...

Battle Hymn of the Republic Julia Ward Howe 1819-1910 This hymn was written during the height of the Civil War. The Atlantic Monthly paid her five dollars for the song.  Abraham Lincoln heard it and asked to have it repeated so he would hear it again.  The song was written to be sung to the tune “ John Brown’s body”. The hymn reminds us that God’s truth is eternal.   Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful...

The music reflects the simple message , “ What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.”  What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus; What can make me whole again? Nothing but the...

O Happy Day Philip Doddridge 1702-1751 This song has been popularized over the years in several different arrangements. The writer would probably not recognize it! Philip Doddridge was an orphan at the age of thirteen and later became a Congregational minister. He wrote many hymns but most were never published.  This hymn was published four years after his death.  The chorus we know was not part of the original hymn but added by an anonymous author over a hundred years later. We find not only happiness but joy in knowing that Jesus blood washed our sins away!!!   O happy...
